Columbus Bar Association Demonstrates Its Non-Partisan Independence

The Columbus Bar Association is a group of professional lawyers, and each election year their members vote on preferred judges based on qualifications rather than political party. In 2020 they have demonstrated their non-partisanship with their polled votes for the judicial races on the ballot in Franklin County.

709 members of the CBA voted on the 10 races across the Common Pleas Court, Tenth District Court of Appeals and Probate Court in Franklin County. Of the 6 candidates that received more than 70% of the votes, exactly half were Democrats and half were Republicans. This is evidence of a commitment to non-partisanship, thus providing a useful resource for independent voters looking for vetting by professionals in the industry. However, it should be noted that only 11% of the CBA members voted, so these views may not represent the majority of attorneys in Central Ohio.

The Ohio Bar Association also provides a similar resource regarding the candidates for 2 Ohio Supreme Court Seats up for election this year, favoring 1 Republican and slightly favoring 1 Democrat. Note again that these results come from an even smaller panel of 24 members and may not necessarily represent the majority of attorneys throughout Ohio.

Note that a professional judge is supposed to apply the law impartially without regard for their political views, and as such the ballots do not list their political affiliation.

Here are the 2020 Columbus Bar Assocation’s results and the Ohio Bar Association’s results.

As always we recommend readers evaluate candidates from several reputable sources of information whenever possible rather than relying on a single source of preference or endorsement.
